Trench Coats 101: How To Fit, Style, & Tie
A trench coat is one of the most timeless and versatile pieces in a well-curated wardrobe. But just like any staple, the true power of a trench coat lies in the fit. When done right, it adds instant polish and elegance to even the simplest outfit. When done wrong, it can overwhelm your shape or fall flat.
In this guide, I’ll break down how a trench coat should fit, tips for styling it, and how to tie the belt whether you’re wearing it open or closed.
What to Look for in a Properly Fitting Trench Coat
Shoulders: The shoulder seams should align with your natural shoulder line. A trench coat with shoulders that are too wide will look boxy and bulky, while too-narrow shoulders can restrict movement and bunch awkwardly.
Sleeves: The sleeve should hit right at your wrist bone — long enough to cover your arms but not so long that they cover your hands. If you plan to wear heavier layers underneath, make sure there’s enough room without the sleeves riding up.
Length: Trench coats come in a variety of lengths, but a good rule of thumb:
- Petite or shorter frames: Opt for a coat that hits mid-thigh to just above the knee.
- Average to taller frames: Mid-calf length adds drama and elegance without overwhelming.
- Want to show off your outfit underneath? Go shorter.
- Looking for maximum coverage and drama? Go longer.
Body Fit: Look for a tailored (but not tight) fit through the torso. Your trench coat should skim your body and allow enough room to comfortably layer sweaters or blazers underneath without pulling at the buttons.
The Belt: The belt should cinch at your natural waist without excessive bunching. It’s what gives the trench coat its iconic hourglass silhouette.

How to Tie a Trench Coat Belt
When Worn Closed:
- Fasten all buttons.
- Pull the belt through the loops and tie in a clean knot or classic bow at the front.
- Make sure the belt sits at your natural waist to highlight your shape.
When Worn Open:
- Skip the buttons.
- Tie the belt in the back using a loose knot or bow — this keeps the front open while still giving shape to the coat and avoiding a bulky, dangling belt.
Whether you’re dressing for spring drizzle, fall layering, or just want to pull your look together with minimal effort, a trench coat is the kind of investment piece that pays off year after year.
