The start of the new season is the perfect time to give your wardrobe a little love. A quick refresh keeps things organized and makes sure your favorite pieces are always within easy reach and ready for their close-up. Here are some simple tips (and a downloadable checklist!) for what to do with your closet during those transitional periods.

Assess Your Current Wardrobe:

As the season comes to an end, take the opportunity to evaluate the clothes, shoes, and accessories you’ve worn and those you haven’t. As you go through the following steps, take note of anything you may need to put on a shopping list (your last step).

Identify Transition Pieces:

Pick out items that are suitable for the upcoming season and set them aside. Some items, like lightweight sweaters or jackets, can be versatile and work for multiple seasons. Assess if any pieces can transition into the next season with slight styling modifications. Keep these accessible in your closet rather than storing them away.

Assess For Repairs or Alterations:

Check your clothes and accessories for any damages, loose buttons, or hems that need attention. Make necessary repairs or alterations to ensure they are ready to wear when the season comes around again. That includes polishing and cleaning shoes, boots, or other accessories that need it.

Donate or Sell Unwanted Items:

If you come across clothes that you no longer wear or that don’t fit, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online. This helps declutter your wardrobe and gives you a fresh start for the season.

Clean And Store Off-Season:

Pack away garments and accessories that are not suitable for the current season. Launder or dry-clean your clothes before storing them. This removes any stains or odors and helps preserve the fabric. Shave pilling sweaters so they’re ready to wear when you return to them the following season.

Use storage bins to protect them from dust and pests. Avoid using mothballs, as they can leave a strong odor on your clothes. Label the containers clearly, making it easier to locate them when the season changes. Store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

To make storing your off-season pieces a breeze, here are a few favorite products that’ll help keep everything neat, protected, and ready for next time!

Retrieve New-Season:

Recover and examine any stored clothing for the upcoming or current season. Iron out any wrinkles, if necessary (you’ll be thankful you did when its time comes).

Organize Your Closet:

Rearrange your closet to prioritize the clothes you’ll be wearing during the current season. Hang or fold them neatly for easy access. Check out my post How You Hang Your Clothes Can Help You Dress Better for some helpful organization tips.

Make a Shopping List:

Take note of any gaps in your wardrobe. Identify essential pieces you need to purchase to complete outfits or replace worn-out items for the upcoming season. This will help you shop more intentionally and avoid impulse buys.

Based on your evaluation of the passing season, note any items you may need for the next year. This will help you plan ahead and take advantage of sales or discounts when the time comes.

Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a tidy closet and the perfect pieces ready to go — no matter what the season throws your way!
